general discussion

anything and everything to do with labi and labi alumni

How about we start a Big Brother/Sister system and we write and BLESS the current students. Maybe we can get someone from the office to organize it and we would all be assigned a student every year. Remember how much fun it was to get mail? It was for me at least. We can write to them on a regular basis, encourage them and maybe bless them financially once in a while. What do you all think? We can call the office and maybe get it started by August!!!!

Hello EVERYONE! I can't believe that I haven't been able to keep in touch lately. I try not to get hooked on the internet while at work, and let's not talk about MySpace! So addicting. Anyhow, am sorry I missed the reunion. Hopefully I can attend the next gathering. Well, about this Big Brother/Sister deal, I think it's a good idea. You can count me in. It's already August, so I'm assuming school is about to start. I would like to send a care package or something to get the school year started. Yvonne, can you get this started for us? Thanks..

just a question:
how many of you know someone who still owes $ on their labi account?

3:59 PM

Yes Noemi, I will get it started. That care package sounds really good. I will call Mario and let you all know what happens....And no I do not owe any money to LABI....

lol! no, the question was:
how many of you *KNOW OF SOMEONE* who still owes money on ther labi account.
no names, just a "raise of hands" if you will.

7:26 PM

LOL!!Sorry, I thought you were gonna ask me to pay up!!! But I think I might know someone. Imagine if everyone would pay their balances??

Blogger Noemi said...

WOW! I don't even know anyone who attends LABI... I'm sure the school can provide a list??
Yvonne, I hope that we can do something for these students.
How about Missions? Does anyone still send money to Sis. Ice-Ice-Sela?

I would most definately loved to be involved with this! How exciting! Remember those days where you would pray for a letter...some people would get mail allll the time - and some really needed it. I would love to make care packages! Count me in!

10:08 AM

Ok guys, I called the school today and spoke with Rachel. She said that the ideas sounds great, she was gonna talk to Mario and let us know. She could probably get us a roster but it is subject to change. I told her all we needed was a count of how many girls/guys and we would just send the care packages labeled. Then she could assign the boxes and the students would write to us and that's how we would each get our own sister/brother. Please help me pass the word around, I posted a bulletin on My Space but I know that we can all help.....So far there is 5 people signed up...As per Rachel there will be something like 40+ students. We have like a week to get this ready....

Ok, excuse my's my Mexican culture coming out....and I don't proof read.....

Great job Yvonne. I guess I'll start buying stuff and mail the package once you give us the green light.
Hey Melisa... how's it going? It's been a while since I last spoke to you. Are you still practacing your EspaƱol?

10:11 AM

Ok guys, I spoke with Brother Mario Escobedo today and he was really excited. He told me that he had mentioned it at the reunion but did not have a concrete plan yet. Thank God we El Pasoans think alike!!! I kind of explained to him the idea that we had and he seemed to like it, although he does not want to make it too formal; he would like to keep it balanced. You know common sense, he would not want ceratain people mentoring LABI students. We need to get the care packages going but we need at least 40 people to volunteer, so if you know of anyone that would like to menton LABI students they are more than welcome. We have about a week, help me spread the word....

9:54 PM

Ok guys, I think that we can start sending our packages now. Since we did not get enough people to sponsor all the students, I think that the first years will get them. We can send like shower supplies, school supplies and anything else you can think of. This is just to get this started, after they respond we can send them gift cards or money. Thank you for your support.

how many students are enrolled this semester? do we get a picture of the student we're adopting?
if i wanted to adopt a student, what's the 1st step?

10:04 AM

There are about 40+ students enrolling. Since we did not have enough volunteers yet, we will start with the first years. After we start spreading the word and maybe be able to adopt all of them. After you send the "Care Packages" a student will write you back and that will determine which student you will mentor. After you start communicating with them maybe you can ask them for a picture.

Yvonne...count me in...I think it's too late to send a package, but I can still be a big sister to someone and send care packages...let me know what you need

11:05 AM

The first step to adopt a student is to send a "care package." Some examples of what you can send are shower needs, school supplies or anything that you can think of. Remember how it was when you were there. This is just to get the Big Brother/Sister program started. After the office receives the care packages, the dorm pastors will distribute them between the first years. Then the students will write you back (thank you note) and you will know which one is your student. I am assumming that you would like to adopt a guy, oh and don't forget to label your package (guy/girl). After a student is assigned to us, we will write to them, encourage them, mentor them, bless them, call them and anything else that we can do for them. Let me know if you have any more questions.

9:58 PM

Hello everyone,

I am waiting on Rachel to give me a head count to see how many guys/girls the first year class has. I only have 4 guys that have volunteered so far, I was thinking of having us married couples mentor guys, just in case we do not get enough guys to to sponsor all of the guys in the class. I will call Rachel in the morning and will let you all know how many guys we need to sponsor. ANYMORE VOLUNTEERS?????

10:54 PM

Ok, I spoke with Rachel today and there are six girls and seven guys. Since we only have four guys that have volunteered so far, my husband and I will mentor a guy. Hopefully Ceci and Richie, Mel and Art wouldn't mind sponsoring a guy either. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Thanks you all!!!

that's funny-no, I just did the gift card thing...i wanted my girl to be able to shop for what she needs. It was just hard to decide, but I promise to get her something special as the semester progresses --- I loved getting those care packages with all the goodies-once I get to know her, I will send them over to her...hope everyone is doing great!

8:10 AM

Ceci and Richie,

Thank you for your support!!! Would you guys mind mentoring a guy? We don't have enough guys that have volunteered and I think we still have a couple of guys without a mentor. If you do, just send the care package to the school and label it for a "guy." They will deliver it and let you know who the student is. Let me know if you have anymore questions....:)

thank you all for your love.

for the last 2 days i've been feeling pretty miserable.

headaches, nose aches, only able to breathe through my throat, causing dry mouth and a serious sore throat, doped up on 3 different kinds of meds (steroids to prevent swelling, antibiotics to prevent infection and some serious pain killers) making me feel pretty woozy.
i couldn't even watch 'lucky number slevin' on our new dvd player 'cause i kept dozing off....

but, thankfully, i woke up this saturday a.m. feeling a little better.

mild headache, a little dizzy, but a tad better.

the swelling is down though not completely (i still got a month or so for my nose to look normal again) and after a week of lying around the house doped up on meds, i finally feel myself.

no more vacation/recovery time for me. it's back to the grind monday morning!

okay, guys...i got the news as of why I have not heard from my buddy. It seems that only four of us have sent care packages-come on all alumni, there are only a little over 30 students, and only four of us have answered to the call. I am calling you all out to step up to the plate and send the care packages. We should be ashamed of ourselves. Let's remember when we were students and looked forward to someone blessing us with a little something-letters of encouragement, love offerings, care packages- let's do something for these students!

I really enjoyed the Holidays at LABI. Remember the door decorating and Christmas on the River Walk? I do have one question- I want to know the reason as to why Christmas tree decorating and lighting which took place in the AD building was by invitation only? Laura was always there and quite proud of it. Anyway- my friends, I miss the celebrations at LABI. One of my favorite memories is door decorating- Mel and I used one of my caps for inspiration. Oh and let's not forget the Grand Christmas Choir-we would perform our hearts out for the remaining 5 students who were not in the Christmas Choir. Okay, I just had a crack up! Anyone else have a favorite memory?

2:32 PM
Blogger Laura said...

It was because i was in the elite group "Student Council" Just, but I do remember the fun we used to have on that river walk with people following us all the way down...I don't know why.just kidding...but I do remember lip-singing with the Christmas choir-I was great at the facial expressions but it was all an act...can you blame me, though? anyone else?

8:31 PM
Blogger Tito R. said...

Lets see, I remember singing or caroling in the boats on the riverwalk. I thought it would be emarassing but people were actually singing along. So that was pretty fun, and cold.

I miss seeing Little man getting mad at Art all the time too. Hilarious!!

our 3rd year, alex infante, unbeknownst to the rest of us, had taken the liberty to name our class the ever-regretable title of 'trend-setters.'
when confronted by bro. reyes about his tejano dancing in chapel, he told alex, "alex, i hope this isn't the trend that you're trying to set for others to follow."
wasn't that great?!
it's like, "well, actually, bro. reyes, yes. this IS the trend we're trying to set. is there something wrong with two guys dancing tejano together in chapel? i don't get it. should we have danced with girls instead?"

too funny.

My all time favorite memory was when Mike and Mondo left campus without permission and after hours. When they were caught by, who else, bro. Reyes. He questioned them seperatly. Actually Mike didn't even know he talked with Mondo first.
Well when bro. Reyes finally confronted Mike and stated that he had already talked to Mondo, Mike responded, "What did Mondo say?"
He was like a deer in headlights. Hilarious!!!

Hey guys and ladies,

I don't know how many of you all remember me. I was at Labi for a couple of years from 95-97. I'm in San Angelo now. I am married with 3 kids. Elizabeth and I started our married lives there at LABI and we now have Kandra (10), Jared (8), and Jonah (4). For the past few years I had been working for Verizon in the Internet and DSL business. I was laid off from there last year and at this time I have my own catering business and I'm working for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas. I'll be in San Antonio the weekend of July 13, 2007 for Promise Keepers. I would love to see any of you while I'm there so let me know. Feel free to call me at 325-227-4503. My wife and I are members of Solid Rock Church. I am still playing my sax and my wife and I lead worship every once in a while. We'll be leading this Father's Day (Pray for us!) God has been dealing with me in a big way in the last couple of years as far as my calling is concerned and he is beginning to open doors of ministry for me. He has laid a great burden on my heart for men. God is showing me that the church needs strong men to lead in our churches and to come along side our pastors and help lift them up. I have missed all of you. I haven't really heard from anyone except Iris since she lives here in town. Please pray that God would continue to open doors for me to minister to people. I would also like to say feel free to call me if you have an event at your church or anywhere else that you need catering for. I feel this is part of my ministry. I'm very reasonable and don't mind traveling. Some other great news is that I've lost about 45 pounds and I'm still losing. God is showing me that discipline will produce great results. God wants to use us but he needs us healthy to do what he's called us to do. I pray that all of your are blessed and don't be strangers. I would love to hear from anyone from LABI. With much love from San Angelo, Texas Macario (Mac) Sedino Jr. 325-227-4503. 1029 Scott Lane San Angelo, Texas 76905. Benji, Mando, I'd really love to hear especially from you my FRIENDS.
